El Paso native Adrian Esparza uses as his raw materials the kitsch souvenirs of the border region, he deconstructs commercially cast ceramics and brightly colored serape blankets and tourist shop fabrics, then reassembles and reinvents them into new aesthetic objects that force the viewer to reconsider cultural divisions between high and low art, between the academic and the popular, and between the visual and the functional
